Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm began hearing testimony Wednesday to help her decide whether to remove Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office over allegations of misconduct.
The mayor and his former chief of staff are charged in criminal court with lying under oath about their romantic involvement. They were testifying at a summer 2007 whistle-blower trial that eventually led to the city's paying more than $8 million to settle three lawsuits.
Kilpatrick's problems became public in January, when the Detroit Free Press reported he had exchanged romantic text messages with his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, indicating the two were having an affair.
After the text messages became an issue, Kilpatrick was charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, and misconduct in office. Beatty was charged with perjury. Both could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
